Chosen song - Madonna, Material Girl

I have decided to use Madonnas track 'Material Girls' for my music video. Madonna is a controversial artist whos first album was released 26 years ago in 1983. After analysing the lyrics for the song I found the main idea of the song is that all she wants is money to buy materials and to compete with other girls and what material items they have. This helped me to decide how I will create my music video and what the whole idea of it will be. Below is the original music video to Madonnas material girls.

Madonna is a mainstream artist, she appeals to a large audience and sells lots of music, her songs are well known with people old and young and her old songs are still played today for example material girls.

History of Music videos

The Beatles were the first music artists to have video with their music. In 1964 they created a 'mock documentary' the video doesnt show the band playing music or singing very often and the audience for the video were passive as they just watched the video they weren't involved in it. The beatles video is shown below.

In 1966 Bob Dylan's music video below was released, the video doesn't show the artist performing and doesn't really have any meaning/narrative it just shows the artist holding the lyrics to the song.

After this lots of artists produced 'Filmed inserts' to show on TV when the artist were not available to perform live. TV show top of the pops began playing music videos in the the late 1970's however it wasn't until 10 years later when MTV was launched, showing music 24 hours a day and making a music video a main method of marketing for the artist. Below is The buggles music video 'video killed the radio star' this was the first music video to be played on MTV on 1st August 1981.

Music videos are a marketing device for the music industry, fans like to see the artist performing as well as listening to them the videos help to promote the sale of the record. Now every artist produces a music video to go with their tracks. Michael Jackson and Janet Jacksons video 'Scream' was the most expensive music video to be made, helping majorly with the marketing of the product. This video is shown below.

Brief

The brief I have chose to do for my media coursework is;

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video together with two of the following three options:

* a website homepage for the band
* a cover for its release on DVD
* a magazine advertisement for the DVD

During this task I will use the key concepts LIIAR along with narrative and genre

Language
In music videos the artist is the main person. The artist will be shown in the centre of all camera shots and close ups are used to show the artist. There may be dancers or other performers in the music video however they won't be shown as often as the artist.

Institution

A music video is made by the record company of the artist. Music videos are produced to promote the artist and to help with sales of albums.

Ideology
Music videos are created to show the story of the song. Most of the time the video relates to the song. It also shows the main artist performing which is what fans want to see.

Audience
A music video is a way of marketing an artist or their song. It attracts the audience as they feel involved, they like to see the artist performing the track rather than just hearing it. Music channels are very popular nowadays, if people are watching a music channel and see a video they like it may make them become a fan of the performer.

Narrative
Every song has a story or meaning behind it, this is the narrative of a music video. The action in the music video usually relates to the lyrics in the song, if it didn't the music video wouldn't be as interesting and it would have no meaning.

Genre
Music Videos are of all different genres depending on the track.
